Joe Johnson

Joe Johnson is a staff writer for the Athens and covers the criminal justice beat. He joined the paper in 2003 after leaving Greenwich Time, where he had been senior staff writer. A native of New York, he is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Connecticut Sexual Assault Crisis Center's Sensitivity in Journalism Award, the New York City Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists' Deadline Club Award; the Georgia Associated Press 2003 Story of the Year, Public Service and Beat Reporting awards, and the 2004 Georgia Press Association's Community Service Award. He was twice named Times-Mirror Journalist of the Year, and is a two-time Pulitzer Prize nominee. He reported in-depth on the Martha Moxley murder case that led to the conviction of Michael Skakel 25 years after the fact, leading to appearances on television shows such as Hardball with Chris Matthews. His reporting has also led to appearances on the Today Show and Good Morning America, and is author of "Thief: The Bizarre Story of Fugitive Financier Martin Frankel." He earned a B.A. at Pace University in New York in 1986.
